Relex Smile - The Gentle Form of Eye Laser

WHAT IS RELEX SMILE?

The ReLEx smile treatment is the latest development of the Femto-LASIK procedure and offers an extremely safe and gentle correction of ametropia. It combines state-of-the-art femtosecond technology with high-precision lenticular extraction.

The crucial advantage: with ReLEx smile we can laser your eyes without having to create a “flap” and don’t have to open a large corneal area, as is necessary with LASIK. A special femtosecond laser prepares a thin, three-dimensional lenticular disc inside the cornea, which is removed via a tiny 2 mm opening at the cornea.

This procedure protects the eye, the cornea remains stable and flap complications are excluded. This minimally invasive treatment is our first choice for the correction of myopia, astigmatism and dry eyes.

RELEX SMILE EXPLAINED

How has EuroEyes been able to improve the last 25 years?

Over the last 25 years, numerous refractive treatments have been carried out by the EuroEyes clinical group under the direction of Dr. Jørn Jørgensen. By using advanced cutting-edge technology, we ensure that our treatments keep getting better and better. For you that means: safer, preciser, more gentle and more customized treatments.

Why is life easier without glasses?

Waking up in the morning with sharp vision, enjoying life to the fullest without any restrictions, to see intense colours – that’s what it’s like to live a life without glasses or contact lenses. That’s why we offer patients the entire spectrum of refractive surgery to correct their vision. We treat more than 25,000 patients with short- or long-sightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia or cataracts every year. We pave the way to a life free of glasses and contact lenses without any limitations to your vision.

The Process

  • 1

Laser vision correction without a corneal flap

The Lasik procedure used to involve cutting a flap and folding it back to remove corneal tissue point by point. However, ReLEx smile eye surgery is minimally invasive and makes laser vision correction possible without the need for a corneal flap.

  • 2

Creation of the lenticule and the incision

With VisuMax a tiny 2 mm incision is created in the cornea and the refractive lenticule is created in a single step. This leaves the upper layers of corneal tissue largely untouched.

  • 3

Removal of the lenticule and rehabilitation

The lenticule is removed through the incision with only minimal disruption to the corneal biomechanics. Removing the lenticule changes the shape of the cornea, thereby achieving the desired refractive correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

In principle, a vision defect such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism is corrected by a computer-controlled precision laser. The cornea is remodelled in such a way that the defect is removed and the patient can see sharply again without glasses or contact lenses. How this works with individual ametropia will be explained below.

Laser eye surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and is painless, thanks to locally anaesthetised eye drops; depending on the procedure, it takes only a few seconds to minutes. EuroEyes uses the latest laser eye correction techinique, the ReLEx smile method, for the correction of myopia and astigmatism, up to a total of  -10 dioptre. The ReLEx smile is minimally invasive and is the logical advancement of the historical PRK, LASIK and Femto-LASIK procedures. Femto-LASIK is used for farsightedness of up to +3 dioptre, with or without astigmatism.

This laser eye surgery is only suitable within a certain indication spectrum, which is determined by corneal thickness, pupil size, ablation height and residual thickness of the cornea. You can find out whether this procedure is suitable for you during your no-obligation eye check. You and your doctor will determine the most suitable procedure for you in a detailed consultation during the preliminary examination.

With ReLEx smile, a lenticular (correction lens) is generated with the femtosecond laser in the cornea, below the nerve fibre layer. This lens is spherical (lenticular) in the case of pure myopia and ovoid (egg-shaped) in the case of astigmatism. This correction lens is removed by a small incision (opening) of only 2-4 mm, whereby the cornea flattens out and has the same curvature in all directions. This permanently corrects the defective vision and all images are sharply reproduced on the retina. If the visual defect is higher or the cornea is too thin for laser eye surgery, a special lens procedure such as the ICL method can be used to correct the visual disorder.

Laser eye surgery for farsightedness up to +3 dioptre. and astigmatism up to 3 dioptre. The Femto-LASIK method uses a femtosecond laser to generate an approx. 100-120 micrometer flap on the surface of the cornea and opens it like a book cover. Then the excimer laser is used to ablate the cornea in a computer-controlled ring shape and the cornea is divided centrally. If there is a curvature of the cornea, it is corrected at the same time using special ablation techniques. This gives the cornea greater refractive power and a symmetrical curvature in all directions. As a result, the defective vision is permanently corrected and all images are sharply reproduced on the retina. If the visual defect is higher or the cornea is too thin for laser eye surgery, special lens techniques such as the ICL method can be used to correct the visual disorder.

The preparation time is about 20 – 30 minutes. The treatment itself (while the laser is in use) generally only lasts a few minutes. The entire stay at the clinic is about 1.5 – 2 hours.

In general, we carry out laser treatment for patients from 18 years old up to the age of 50. When presbyopia sets in, from approx. 45 years of age, a correction with the multifocal/trifocal lenses is usually more suitable. We will discuss this with you during the preliminary examination.

It is desirable that, prior to the operation, your vital signs have remained stable for the past one to two years.

Typically, the patient regains the ability to see well on the following day after the operation.

At EuroEyes, the highest level of attention is paid to total compliance with the most stringent requirements for the quality of treatment and standards of hygiene. This means that the risk of complications caused by the laser vision correction is very low. True complications are extremely rare. Clear and dedicated patient compliance concerning the follow-up appointments is particularly important to promote optimal healing. The prescribed eye drop regimen should be strictly observed, as well as the recommendations given to the patients by the staff of the medical institution for the postoperative period should be followed. Side effects (adverse events) that may occur from time to time in the laser vision correction are usually short-term ones, they do not cause any serious concerns and are completely treatable.
